Brief history of the 2002

Despite the fact that the 1600-2/1602 was the first incarnation of the small two door body style for BMW, the 2002 was really the car that made the company, especially in America. To really understand what the 2002 meant, you have to remember what cars were like in the late 1960s.

In 1968 cars were all about compromises. Big American V8 cars were fast, but they didn’t handle particularly well. British and Italian sports cars were small, nimble and quick, but they were not the most reliable things around, and a family was hard pressed to use one as it’s only transportation due to size limitations. Even the sedans – the Alfa Berlina and Rover four door cars for example – were a compromise because of reliability. Volvo was making family sized cars, but they were not particularly sporty in stock trim.

The 1600-2 changed all of this. It fit four or five people with luggage, started every morning, accelerated quickly and handled well. When introduced in 1966 it cost around $2,500. It may be hard to believe now, but at the time there were no other cars that offered room, reliability and performance for a reasonable price.

BMW, like many European car makers, offered a sports version of the 1600. This was the 1600TI- the key difference was a pair of Solex dual throat carburetors instead of one single barrel unit. This helped power significantly, but it could not pass the new American emissions regulations. This prompted Max Hoffman- then the sole importer to the US of BMW and many other marques–to ask that the two litre engine from the existing 2000 sedan and 20000C/CS coupes be put into the 1600-2 body. This change put BMW on the map and invented the sports sedan.

David E. Davis of Car & Driver asked people to “turn [their] hymnals to page 2002” and “blew his mind” on the new car. For not much more money people had a car that performed even better than the 1600-2. In a way the 1600-2 has been short changed, but regardless the 2002 is a cult car. It goes everywhere, accelerates, handles and stops like a sports car, and it has space for four or five people. Cared for it will do a quarter million miles or more. Driving a 2002 brings comments from all sorts of people who either owned one or wish they had. BMW makes cars that cost fifty times what a 2002 used to, but these cars all owe their popularity in some way to the 2002.
